Day Fifteen : Nundroo to Ceduna 152km

It was a freezing cold start at 0.3 degrees when we rode out. My hands were numb again for the first 30km. The bag was much easier to zip up because I was wearing nearly all of my clothes.

This was a really nice ride as we headed to Ceduna. Glen had told everyone that Ceduna has a population of 25,000 people. He got paid out for the whole trip as the real population is only 2,000. I told everyone I was going to Westfield to buy some things at Myer and thought I might go to see Phantom at the Opera at the Ceduna Opera House. It was great he copped so much flak all day from everyone.

We were all excited heading to Ceduna as we were heading back to civilisation. We worked out that we hadn’t seen a residential house since Kalgoorlie, which was 1,215km ago. It had just been roadhouse after roadhouse and literally nothing else. If you could see as far as Darwin, that is all you would see–absolutely nothing. It is hard to conceptualise the remoteness, isolation and how barren it is.

We arrived at Penong for lunch on a Saturday. As we rode in, there were kids playing footy with the cars parked around the oval beeping their horns with every goal. Oh, the memories of Country Footy.

There was a hall, police station, a café and people. They made us beautiful sandwiches and cake for lunch and were really welcoming. It was so good to see some life.

Ceduna was really nice and much better than I expected. The accommodation was fantastic and what a change from 24 hours earlier.

The hotel was so clean with stunning views out onto the ocean, such a joy to be back in civilization. I went for a walk along the jetty and watched a bit of the footy with Peter while we had a couple of beers. It makes such a difference when you get in the middle of the afternoon instead of at night.

Really enjoyed a comfy bed, hot shower and 10 of hours sleep.
