Day One : Perth to York

Day One : Perth to York

I’ve been preparing myself for a few months and it’s almost surreal to be actually riding my bike with a bunch of strangers.

Despite it only being day one, the difficulty of the ride has already exceeded my expectations.

In the early morning, we cycled past 10km of hills as we left Perth, riding at a hasty speed of 35km an hour.

Cycling up the first hill felt gruelling, and like it was never-ending. As we rode up the freeway, trucks and cars would speed past us. Every time a huge truck would zoom by, a crazy amount of adrenaline would course through my body.

In the past, I’ve ridden up Crafers a few times but today, it felt 10 times as challenging. The elevation that we rode today was equivalent to riding halfway up to Mt Kosciusko.

Reaching the top of the hill was one of the most rewarding feelings of the day. Accomplishing this with a group of people made it even more gratifying because we could share our wins together.

However, I will say I was not prepared for the way down…at all.

When it was time to finally go downhill, the headwind was incredibly strong and we had to pedal just as hard. It felt like there was no proper break for me to catch my breath for the whole 100 kilometres down.

Although I trained for this bike ride, I was only cycling long distances on flat ground. All I can say is that my training did not prepare me for 100 kilometres of non-stop hills as I rode into the howling gale.

All exhausted, we finished our ride with a delicious Italian dinner at Bellissimo Restaurant.

Along with the good food, there was good company. This is where I had the opportunity to get to know others on the trip more and bond with everyone as a team.

There are some extremely inspirational people on these types of tours. I met a new friend Leah, who has climbed all seven of the highest peaks around the world, including Mount Everest and Kilimanjaro!

The rest of the day at York was quiet and quaint. York is a humble little town in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia, filled with Victorian and Federation buildings that are rich with history.

I can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s ride will be like.To donate towards any of the four charities please visit: https://www.wemakeadifference.com.au/nullarborbikeride
