Day Six : Kalgoorlie to Norseman 189km

Day Six : Kalgoorlie to Norseman 189km

A simply stunning day 27 degrees barely a breath of wind and not a cloud in the sky.

We headed off at 7.00am on a cool morning. I felt like I should have looked around a bit more but I was so tired I needed the rest.

Today is the first of 3 / 180 plus km rides and by the time we got to Norseman I think it was one of the easiest rides of the trip. It is strange saying that 189 km was comfortable and I would like to think it is because I am getting fitter but the fact we had no wind hardly any hills and a lot of downhill had a lot to do with it.

We really lived it up today. For morning tea we stopped at a roadhouse and had a cappuccino and donuts, so good to get a good coffee in the morning. Lunch was a hamburger and chips at another roadhouse. We had a bit of time up our sleeve today so we took a bit longer for lunch.

I was riding with Richard in the morning and when we stopped for a water break Doug the gentle giant who is our bike mechanic rode up the road a bit and waited but he didn’t show so we thought he had got into the bus. Doug who has ridden all around the world then said do you want to catch the others, I said sure do you have a car, he laughed and said just keep an eye on my back tyre.

Seriously we sat on between 35 and 45km an hour for about 5 km until we caught them it was a bit of a blast. We repeated this later in the day when I was late leaving the drink stop.

I actually had time to look at some of the scenery and it was really quite stunning, full of salmon gums which actually look like they have been painted with copper.

It is really calming and de-stressing riding through these areas. When there isn’t any traffic it is dead quite which unfortunately is broken by the roar of a massive road train when they go past.

We got to Norseman at about 4.30 pm and gentle Doug took oof his top and dived in the pool only to get out just as quick as it was absolutely freezing. We had a good laugh at the big man.

Staying at a beautiful caravan park with trees everywhere. We leave at 7.00 am in the morning so we won’t really see that much of it.

Glen the elite cyclists is going to watch the footy with me on Sunday, he follows the rugby but I am converting him to be a Port supporter.

That’s all for today I had better try to get some sleep. Strangely enough I am not as sore tonight. I am either getting fitter or just used to the pain.

Till tomorrow
