Day Eight : Balladonia to Caiguna 182km

Day Eight : Balladonia to Caiguna 182km

Day 3 of our cluster of over 180km days. It is getting tough mentally as more so than physically. The last thing I really feel like doing is riding, but we all had breakfast and hit the road.

Today we rode along the straightest stretch of road in the world, which was 146.4km dead straight. It is also where the Royal Flying Doctor lands when they need to pick up a patient.

It wasn’t long before we hit the straight stretch of road and this road could send you crazy. It is dead flat and straight, the scenery is all the same and you just keep pedalling. It is like you are in the gym with a picture in front of you and you pedal and pedal but you never move. This is how it felt today, absolutely nothing changed for the whole day.

The weather again was a spectacular 26 degrees and no wind. The day became a real battle towards the end of it and the last 40km I rode in front of the of our group at 22km an hour as we were all exhausted.

Caiguna is just a roadhouse with some old shipping type containers for rooms. There is nothing else at Caiguna, we are in the middle of nowhere.

I didn’t have a good night, I showered and changed and was about to go for dinner when I started to feel a bit sick, and then within minutes I was throwing up in the bathroom and stayed that way until 4.00 am. It was a horrendous night, no idea what it was but it happened extremely quickly, I must have reacted to something I ate but no one else was sick so I have no idea.

I walked over to the Roadhouse at 4.00 am in case they were open to get some Gatorade but they shut. It was a long night.
