Day Two : York to Merredin 165km

Day Two : York to Merredin 165km

This was horrendous, 165km predominately uphill and still into a 35km an hour wind.We woke up early in the morning to prepare for the long day ahead of us. We left York at 7:15 am and the morning air was cold and uninviting. It was a struggle to get the ball rolling and begin our ride.

Today, we rode 170km into a 35km headwind. We rode uphill again, with an elevation of 900 metres.

The wind was incredibly strong, pushing against our bodies and making the ride more difficult. It was excruciating and even the most experienced riders said it was one of the most challenging bike rides they have ever experienced.

Again there was absolutely no respite, I hit the wall at 40km and I thought this ridiculous I still have 120km to go. I worked through it and kept going.

I really struggled with the hills and the head wind, I was one of the last riders to get just scrapping in before it got dark.

I was nearly thrown into the support vehicle but managed to avoid it for today.Everyone was so sore at the end of the day. I am not sure if I can remember being so sore after a sporting activity. I could barely move, when I lay down my back would start to cramp and I would have to stand up.

We rode through the heart of the Western Australia Wheatbelt, full of hills and snow gums. Although I soaked in the scenery for a few brief moments, I was mainly focused on the tyre in front of me and kept my head as low as possible. There were three instances where a kangaroo would appear and hop along near us. Although they didn’t pose too much of a risk, it was crazy to see how much strength they have.

We spent a total of 10 hours on the bike, and arrived at Merredin just before dark at 5:30p.m. With the gruelling wind, we were two hours late to our motel, it shows what an impact it has.

I’m completely exhausted and in bed at 9:00 p.m.

Goodnight.
