Thank God for the rest day. It was so needed for all of us. I did as little as possible, but it seemed like it disappeared really quickly. Bit like a working week takes ages then the weekend is over before you know it.
I had a big breakfast, did the washing and walked down to the café and had a coffee with John from Tasmania who was a climate scientist with the CSIRO so really interesting chat with John and his thoughts on Global warming.
I had lunch with Richard at the Kalgoorlie Hotel which was a really good lunch. I seem to be eating a lot and massive meals. I thought I would go and sooth my sore spots in the pool but it was closed for maintenance (bugger).
Spent the rest of the day having a nap and placing ice packs on my sore spots. I went back to the pub for dinner with a few of the team. I think in every country town in Australia you will find a Royal Hotel, Exchange Hotel, a Federation or a Commercial Hotel.
I finished the night with a chocolate nut Sunday back at the motel and had an interesting chat with James from Perth who was finishing dinner. I sent a photo to Richard of the ice cream but I can’t print what his response was (see the photo).
Kalgoorlie is the 4 th largest regional town in WA. It has a population of 29,000 people and is built around the Gold mine on the richest square mile of land in the world.
It is real down to earth country Australia, traditional old federation two storey pubs which is now surrounded by franchise fashion chains, Woolworths, Coles, The Coffee Club, Subway and of course Mc Donalds. This was the first time we have seen traffic lights for a while and I dare say will be the last for a long time.
I should have looked around but I was just so tired I couldn’t really do anything, and there is still 2,400km to go. If anyway one says that this is not that difficult because it is all flat then they have rocks in their head it is incredibly challenging and demanding both physically and mentally.
A friend of mine came up with a good theory to incentivise me when I am getting tired. He send just think that the support vehicle is full of crows supporters and that will keep you cycling so you don’t get put in the van, Haha and he is a crows supporter I am sure I will use that over the next 6 days.
Which consist of
Kalgoorlie – Norseman | 189 km |
Norseman – Balladonian | 190 km |
Balladonian – Caiguna | 182 km |
Caiguna – Cocklebiddy (get in just in time for the Port v Collingwood match) | 61 km |
Cocklebiddy – Madura | 91 km |
Madura – Eucla | 181 km |
This is a big 6 days, catch up tomorrow
