Day Three : Recovery Ride

Day Three : Recovery Ride

Day Three was a lot less strenuous on my body. Although uneventful, it felt like I could recover from the previous day by taking it a bit easier today. There were less hills, allowing us to ride through the flat terrain as we headed closer towards the desert.

We all took a break at the Southern Cross cafe to enjoy some lunch. We talked amongst ourselves and soaked up the sunshine. Other than that, there wasn’t much else to do in Southern Cross.

Since today was an easier ride, I thought there would be more talking while we were riding but we all still stayed in our single file lines while focusing on the path ahead.

This didn’t really bother me though, as I usually ride alone a lot of the time back in Adelaide. I enjoy riding on my own and taking my time to get to my destination. It’s a lot different riding with a group.

There are some really fast riders here. While I’m not the fastest, I would say that I’m also not the slowest. My new friend Glen is undoubtedly the fastest rider of the group. He rides like there’s no tomorrow, flying effortlessly past all of us. Glen is super athletic and used to compete in triathlons. He has done all sorts of tours around the world and has ridden 29,000 kilometres in the last 12 months, which is an incredible feat.

I’m slowly starting to know everyone better and remember names of the people I’m riding with everyday. Another guy, Doug is a mechanic and helped me with a couple minor adjustments with my bike which was very nice. Doug is a very friendly guy and he’s also super tall, so he might not be so comfortable in our tiny rooms tonight.

We are staying in small cabins at the back of Palace Hotel tonight. The room just fits my bike and I have to move it outside everytime I go to the bathroom. It’s a squeeze but it’s also quite cosy.

Tomorrow, we will be on a 225km journey to Kalgoorlie. It’s going to be a long ride and I’m not sure if we will make it there before nightfall.

I’m going to ride with John, who I have been accidentally calling ‘Des’ for the past three days. My mistake. Slowly and surely I will remember everyone’s name. Wish me luck tomorrow!
